Lemon Squares vs. Chick-O-Stick

As the second round of the Southern Sweets Showdown continues, we move on to the Hand-Held Treats region. Here, we have the 6-seed Lemon Squares taking on the underdog 14-seed Chick-O-Stick.

Lemon squares bring that delicate balance of sweet and sour. Like a glass of lemonade concentrated into a gooey bar of goodness, a lemon square tastes like summer. A brief search into the history of this dessert turned up surprisingly little. The earliest references we could find for them were in Joy of Cooking and the 1963 Betty Crocker Cookbook. Who cares, right? You’re not going to write a dissertation on them; you just want to eat them.

Chick-O-Stick we’ve written about before. For a refresher, check out this post from the first round.

So what’s it going to be? Crunchy coconut-y treats? Or homemade lemonade in a bar?

  1. Honestly – this is no contest – light, luscious, tart and sweet – perfection!

  2. I still can’t figure out how Chick-o-sticks beat the venerable Moonpie. I mean come on, a butterfingers middle with coconut vs. a portable s’more.

    • The power of corporate marketing, that’s how. Chick-O-Stick embraced it. Moon Pie didn’t. Same thing happened to Krispy Kreme.

  3. Sound’s like I need to give the guys in Chattanooga a call. Haha.
