The Results are in for the 8 vs 9 Seeds!

The second batch of match-ups in the first round of the Southern Sweets Showdown were not the heated contests you’d expect from such cloelu-seeded competitors … with one exception.

First, the one blowout:

In the Hand-Held Treats Region, we thought we had the makings of a battle of Titans: Goo Goo Cluster versus the famed Pecan Log Roll from Stuckey’s. It seems our nostalgia for that gooey, pecan encrusted treat that was the goal of every road-tripping child of the 60’s and 70’s was overwrought. Poor Stuckey’s never stood a chance against the world’s first combination candy bar. Goo Goo Cluster handily took this round with 83% of the vote.

The second largest margin of victory came in the Cakes, Puddings & Ice Cream Region. The 9-seed Apple Stack Cake must be a lesser known treat in many parts of the South, as it could only manage 29% of the vote versus the 8-seed Coconut Cake. (That being said, I know a few Southerners who will be trying out Apple Stack Cake for the first time this Thanksgiving.)

Not quite a blowout, the match in the Pies, Cobblers & Dumplings Region between #8 Fried Apple Pie and #9 Lemon Ice Box Pie was won handily by the tart, freezer-made concoction. Perhaps it was guest contributor Deborah Krauss’ impassioned ruminations on her grandmother’s “Limmoneissbox Pie” that made the difference, but the day was won handily with 64% of the vote.

In the most heated match to date in the Showdown, the classic Coke Float narrowly edged out Cornbread & Sweet Milk in the Miscellany Region, taking 55.6% of the vote. It was yet another tough blow for the traditionalists.

Stay tuned as we roll out updated brackets and new match-ups tomorrow.
