Round One of the Southern Sweets Showdown rolls on with match-ups between the eight and nine seeds.

Next up, from the Hand-Held Treats Region, we have the 8-seed Goo Goo Clusters facing off with the 9-seed Stuckey’s Pecan Log Roll.

In 1912, the Standard Candy Company in Nashville made candy history. Up until that fateful moment, mass-produced candy bars were square or rectangular bars made entirely of chocolate, caramel or taffy. By combining caramel, marshmallow and roasted peanuts in a round mound of chocolate-sipped goodness, Howell Campbell, Sr. created the world’s first combination candy bar. For years, the treat didn’t have a name, but the company settled on Goo Goo, because “it’s so good you’ll ask for it from birth.”

Meanwhile, in the 1930s, W.S. Stuckey, Sr. opened a roadside pecan stand in Georgia. Offering simple treats and souvenirs, the business expanded to several hundred locations by the 1970s. Could there be anyone in the South over the age of 25 who can’t recall at least once begging their parents to stop at a Stuckey’s for their world-famous pecan log roll? Invented by Stuckey’s wife, Ethel, the company describes the pecan log roll as “fluffy, cherry-laced nougat wrapped in fresh caramel and pecans.” We describe it as “Mmmmmmmm…”

This is a tough match-up: two venerable Southern treats, dripping in culture, history and nostalgia. It’s the Sophie’s Choice of the Southern Sweets Showdown.
