Bracket-Shattering Upset Marks First Round

The first batch of match-ups in the first round of the Southern Sweets Showdown proved to be a mixed bag. We had runaway blowouts and heated contests … with one bracket-shattering upset.

First, the blowouts:

In the Miscellany Region, poor 15-seed Mayhaw Jelly was outclassed by that simply sweet concoction with the even simpler-sounding name: the 2-seed Fudge. In fact, fudge took a full 100% of the vote. Not even our spurious misreading of Wikipedia that Mayhaw jelly was made from old boats could explain that lopsided result. The facts are simple. Southerners love fudge. And very few of us have ever had Mayhaw jelly. We’ll correct that on our end and let you know what we think of the stuff.

The other blowout came in the Pies, Cobblers & Dumplings Region where #2 Peach Cobbler pummeled #15 Coconut Cream Pie. We can only assume that many of our voters saw coconut as an import, whereas they know peaches grow here in the South. Poor coconut cream pie got swept up in a wave of anti-immigration sentiment, accumulating exactly zero votes.

The other two match-ups were much more heated. In the Cakes, Puddings & Ice Cream Region, #2 Pound Cake barely edged out #15 Better Pecan Ice Cream with 60% of the vote.

Then there was the big upset. This is the Miracle on Ice, Douglas over Tyson and Appalachian State over Michigan all rolled into one. Backed by an aggressive social media campaign, 15-seed Bud’s Best Cookies proved they were indeed best by knocking off the stalwart Krispy Kreme Original Glazed Doughnuts by a 61% to 39% margin.  I guess we know who’s really “hot now.”

At least one reader had Krispy Kreme running the table to face Sweet Tea in the finals. Time to tear up that bracket and start over, my friend …

Stay tuned as we roll out updated brackets and new match-ups later today.
