Be a Real Southern Man #16

Welcome to your virtual manual for becoming a Real Southern Man.

Today’s how-to tip is a sober one, but one that will separate the compassionate, respectful Southern men from mere boys. Do this in the South, and no one will think you odd. Do it anywhere else, and you might end up the object of ridicule.

Today, we think you should …

Pull over for a funeral procession.

No matter how hectic your schedule, how urgent your business, there’s no business more urgent than treating your fellow man with respect. All you have to do is pull over to the side of the road for a minute or two as the procession passes. It’s the simple automotive equivalent of a hat removed and a head bowed.

Unfortunately, there will be a few hundred too many funerals in the South this week, following the devastating tornadoes of last Wednesday. All eyes are on us, and no doubt the world will be watching as these funerals begin. What better way to show them what the South is all about than to embrace that fine Southeern tradition of pulling over as you meet a funeral procession?

So pull over that convertible, SUV, delivery truck, big rig or tractor. The Yankees won’t understand it, but that’s okay. We like it that way.
