A Real Southern Man is… #1

How do you define a Real Southern Man? We’d love to hear your comments. But first…

Today’s entry of “A Real Southern Man is…” is not as universal a trait as it should be. However, in surveying our contributors and readers, this particular trait always ranked at the top of the list of those to which all Real Southern Men should aspire. It goes by many names, and there are endless ways in which it is manifested. But live up to this one, and you’re well on your way to being a Real Southern Man.

“A Real Southern Man is a gentleman.”

Call it chivalry. Or call it being well-mannered. Or call it politeness or respect or Southern Hospitality. No matter the name, people know it when they see it. It’s not something Real Southern Men do for appearances or even because it’s the right thing to do. They do it because they respect others and think of others as more important than themselves. Now, Real Southern Men are just as human as anyone. That means they often miss the mark, but the bull’s-eye for which they all aim is labeled “Gentleman.”
